Review Balmain Extatic Gold Musk EDP

20160716_160726

The fashion house has brought out yet another beautiful scent. This one is perfect for winter and smells bold, feminine and strong. The difference is a more “Prêt-à-Couture”, more glamorous, more rock with EXTATIC.

20160716_160738

The name “gold musk” and the colour of the bottle is actually derived from: the combination between the romantic transparency, the softness of the MUSK and the glitter, determined femininity of the GOLD.

Extatic Gold Musk is announced as a tempting, daring and luxurious interpretation of the original, with elegant floral – woody – musky character. This is a Floral Musk fragrance opening of a fresh and clean combination of a fusing and chiseled duet of Bergamot and Aldehydes. It has a bold solar heart infused with captivating white flowers: a radiant blend of Gardenia and Tiare revealing a fascinating femininity. At the base, you will find Akigalawood and Cashmeran as well as Musk illuminated by Benzoin and Sandalwood which wrap you in a precious spicy, creamy and warm trail made of golden sparkles.

20160716_161024

I have really been loving this and is possibly my fav winter scent. It’s warm from the musk yet still really feminine from the floral notes. My 2 favourite perfume notes combined.

If you like scents like Nariciso Rodriguez – Musc for Her or Flower by Kenzo, then you’ll love this.

Review: Jimmy Choo Illicit flower EDT

20160626_122100

This is by far the most feminine fragrance Jimmy Choo has released. This fragrance is definitely a mix of chic, bold and beautiful. Pretty much the Jimmy Choo woman in a bottle. The bottle is the same as its older sister but doesn’t smell anything like it. Jimmy Choo Illicit is sweet and Jimmy Choo illicit is just floral.

20160626_122312

As far as I can think this is the first EDT to be released but don’t be fooled the lasting power is amazing.

Note wise we have:

Top: Apricot, Mandarin and Freesia

Heart: Rose, Grapefruit Flower and Jasmine

Bottom: Musk, Sandalwood and Cashmeran

It has 2 of my favourites notes rose and musk and it is pink so what is not to love about this scent. I would say this is a fruity woody floral fragrance.

20160626_12232820160626_122344

When I sniff it I get rose, sandalwood and grapefruit. It smells to me like a fruity version of Issey Miyake L’eau D’issey florale.

You can find this at Clicks, Dis-Chem, Edgars, Foschini, Red Square, Stuttafords & Truworths from the 15th September 2016 (Right in the middle of spring. Such a perfect spring scent.) For 40ml at R645 , 60ml at R945 and 100ml at R1095.

Fragrance fix friday: Oscar Velvet noir EDP

20160611_143703

Happy Friday my lovies! This Friday I feature the a beautiful golden scent Oscar Velvet Noir.

Oscar de la renta house has come out rapidly with yet another addition to their fragrance family. This time around a dark, strong sensual scent called velvet noir. Appearance wise the bottle is really pretty with the gold shimmery ombre look.

Quite a strong scent. It could actually be a very good unisex fragrance.

Described as a Sensual Woody Oriental with the following notes:

Top: Ginger Crystals, Orange Flower, Jasmine Egypt

Mid: Turkish Rose LMR, Velvet Violet, Osmanthus

Dry: Sensual Amber, Cashmere Musk, Rich Oud Accord

20160611_14374820160611_143823

I get a combination of all the notes and the transition between the levels takes a long time. Lasting power is really great as always I can get a full days wear. Somebody I can imagine wearing this scent when I smell it is the more mature strong woman.

Available from : Truworths, Edgars, Stuttafords & Dis-Chem 100ml for R1345

New fragrance launches

There is always new news in the fragrance department and here’s the latest scoop.

  • Repetto Eau florale EDT

20160427_122744_mh146270205546020160427_122744

My new all time fav scent! Love love love! The bottle design is the same as the previous 2 except this one is a bright sorbet pink emphasize the more lively and fresh take to the originals.

A floral Fruity Woody Fragrance: Notewise we are looking at:

Top Notes:          Pink Grapefruit & Cherry Blossom

Middle Notes:    Violets & Rose Bud

Bottom Notes:   Grey Amber & Cedarwood

Rose is a common note in all but smells totally different. It smells very similar to Issey Miyake L’eau D’issey florale EDT but weirdly enough the notes aren’t the same. Compared to the prior 2 this one is more playful and fresh the previous 2 were more sophisticated and elegant they were very powdery and sweet. Now that it is getting so cold I can’t wear it anymore but I will be sure to be wearing this a lot during the warmer seasons. What I love about this scent is that Repetto has actually managed to add just the right amount of fruity notes to complement the scent and not overpower the floral notes which some perfumers seem to get wrong all the time.

Available from: Stuttafords & Dis-Chem for 50ml at R895 and 80ml EDT R1095.

  • Riri by Rihanna EDP

This is the 5th scent from this singer. Riri describes this scent as flirty and femine. The scent opens with a strong opening chorus of feminine burst of passion fruit, sparkling cassis and Italian mandarin. Then transforms into a bridge of musky, sandalwood with final chorus of sensual vanilla to warm things up. This fragrance is part of the fruity floral family. It smells very sweet and candy-like which is actually the route most celebs tend to take, think Britney Spears and Katy Perry. When I look at this bottle and smell the scent songs like “we found love” and “only girl in the world” start to play in my head. I love the bottle design it doesn’t look like any perfume bottles on the market it combines iconic glamour with a sleek finish.

Pricewise we are looking at R745 for 50ml and R545 for 30ml.

20160409_11005120160409_110508

  • Sofia by Sofia Vergara EDP

Sofia Vergara is an actress her most popular roles playing Gloria in the series modern family. This fragrance is in the floriental family. Her favourite flowers being orchids and roses she wanted to incorporate those into her scent. I really like the design of the bottle it’s a simple yet elegant designs and not over the top with the rose gold accents and diamond cut compact bottle. It smells very similar La Vie est Belle by Lancome. It smells like fruity, rosy candy floss.

Note wise we are looking at:

Top: juicy blackberries, cassis buds and plum nectar

Mid: Colombian rose, violet, Columbian luna musica orchid

Dry: earthy woods, toasted praline, vanilla, sandalwood

This retails at R795 for 50ml and R595 for 30ml.

  • Adam Levine for her EDP

Previously I reviewed the male version but this is the woman’s one. The design is exactly the same except the colour of the fragrance is different. Smells powdery and woody quite a strong scent. I give props on the fact that it is very unique and doesn’t smell like any perfume I have smelt before it takes spicy, woody florals to the next level. Also this fragrance is pretty worth the price considering the quality and expensiveness of the ingredients that have been used in this fragrance.

Notewise we are looking at:

Top: Saffron, crisp citrus, marigold and spice

Mid: Indian jasmine petals, Australian sandalwood, rose petal

Base: benzoin, tears (ya I’m not sure about this one either), creamy vanilla.

Pricing wise: 50ml for R695 and 30ml for R495

  • Agent Provocateur fatale intense EDP

British lingerie brand Agent provocateur has launched a new fragrance this is the latest addition to the fatale family but this one being more intense the difference being previously they used a selection of mix of floral and oriental Fatale intense is a spicier more seductive scent containing things like black liquorice and spiced red chilli. The bottle itself is more mysterious in a cherry red. The scent makes me think of a woman who is mysterious, enticing, fierce and sexy. It’s a heavy scent, spicy but balanced with the sweetness of vanilla, rose and amber. The scent is too sexy for the office but perfect for a night out or hot date.

Notewise you are looking at:

Top: Black liquorice (Hint), Wild dewberry, spiced red chilli pepper

Mid: lush lotus blossom, divine champaca flower, rouge baiser rose

Dry: luxe amber, noir leather accord, Tahitian vanilla.

You can find this at dischem stores (100ml for R1395, 50ml for R995 and 30ml for R795).

Review: Jimmy Choo Illicit EDP and Yardley Bond St pour homme

This time I’ve got one for the guys too but let’s start with ladies first.

  • Jimmy Choo Illicit EDP

Jimmy Choo Illicit EDpjimmy choo illicit 5Jimmy Choo illicit 4

The latest edition to the Jimmy Choo family but with a sweeter, fresher and more youthful take than before. You can still tell that they are related though with same hard note as a base. I’ve never been a fan of the previous Jimmy Choo scents besides Jimmy Choo flash London club as I felt they smelt a bit too “hard” as fruitchoulis I’m more of a soft feminine floral scent kind of a girl. Jimmy Choo Illicit is a bit too sweet for my liking but I do think they are heading in the right direction when it comes to fragrance production.

The thing though about Jimmy Choo fragrances is that they are quality perfumes. You can actually tell if a perfume is good quality by not smelling the alcohol on initial spritz.

The bottles are always masterpieces, this one in particular oozes luxurious and decadence inspired by an art deco style multi-facet crystal glass tumbler with a contrasting silver lid that makes it striking and bold casing inside a gold elixir.

Note wise we have:

Top: Ginger and bitter orange

Heart: Rose and jasmine

Base: Honey, amber and sandal wood

I can definitely smell all the notes as they transition because they haven’t used many notes in it to mix up. The scent actually transitions across the levels very quickly and fades quite quickly too. I can only get max hours wear from it unless I spray it in my hair or my clothes. The dry down smells like vanilla which is not an official note but it is probably due to the combination of honey and amber. I would describe this as a sweet warm soft fragrance, think macaroons nestled in rose petals (what more could a girl ask for?)

In summary if you are a fan of warm, floral-gourmands like YSL black opium, Viktor & Rolf flower bomb, Viktor & Rolf bon bon or Prada candy you will love this scent.

You can find these at Foschini, Truworths, Edgars, Stuttafords, Dis-Chem, Red Square & Clicks for R695-40ml, R995-60ml and R1195-100ml.

Top fragrance picks for spring part 2 and some FAQ about fragrances

As promised here is the second part of all you need to know about fragrances. Here are questions I’ve gotten emailed in the past.

  1. What is the difference between EDP and EDT? EDP stands for Eau de Parfum and EDT stands for Eau de Toilette. The compounds in a EDP are more concentrated than a EDT making EDPs smell stronger and last longer.
  2. How do I test a fragrance in a store? Sniff it from the bottle if you like it then only pick 1 fragrance and spray it on your wrist. I like to wear it for a while to see if the fragrance transitions on your skin, if you plan on testing more than 1 scent use the coffee beans that should be by the counter to neutralise your sense of smell. I don’t like using the card board strips they provide in store as scent can smell different on different people.
  3. Where should I apply fragrances? As Marilyn Monroe once said: “ spray your perfume wherever you would like to be kissed” Spray it on your pulse points but not all just pick 1. This could be either the neck, wrist, behind the ears, behind the knees or behind your ankle. Fragrances rise from your natural heat so the lower you spray it the more it rises. Also never rub fragrances once you’ve sprayed them this can break the compounds and end up altering the scent.
  4. What is fragrance layering? This can either mean where you apply different scents on top of each other or when someone has dry skin it means where you buy those sets where it comes with the fragrance, body wash and body lotion with the same scent and you wash with the body wash then apply the body lotion and lastly spritz on the fragrance, this technique makes the fragrance last longer.
  5. Why does the scent not last long on my skin? Mostly this has to do with dry skin as fragrances evaporate faster on dry skin. The best time to apply a perfume is straight after a bath or shower when the pores are still open. Also to add moisture to the skin invest in a fragrance free body lotion.
  6. How must I store my fragrances? Heat, cold and light are enemies of fragrances. Boxes that the fragrances came in make great protectors of light. Every beauty editor has a fragrance shelf in their cupboards and that is the best place for fragrances.
  7. What is the lifespan of a fragrance? If stored correctly it can range from between 3 to 5 years.
  8. What are the current fragrance trends? For Spring 2015 there is a big focus on fresh, fruity and floral aromas.

Now lets continue with some newly launched top fragrance picks:

Top spring perfumes 2

  • Vince Camuto amore EDP

vince camuto 1 vince camuto amore 2 vince camuto amore 3

Vince Camuto was a shoe and accessories designer which sadly passed away at the beginning of this year. The box is really massive which provides added protection. The lid has a beautiful intricate filigree design. The bottle itself is a true vision it wears a medallion of Vince camuto signature crest which symbolises commitment to excellence, enduring strength and family heritage. Amore embodies the fun and flirty expression of a woman falling unforgettably in love. Inspired by undying passion and romance. It is part of the floriental fruity fragrance family. Top notes include sparkling clementine ice, cassis bud, bergamot and passion fruit. The heart consists of wild muguet, blush orchids, fresh freesia, floating lotus. The dry down consists of silky sandal wood, cashmere accord, crystallised amber and musk. I quite like this scent it really does smell like love, even with the fruity and floral notes it dries down nicely to a sweet yet warm finish. The sweetness sickly sweet but more of a sweet floral. The sweetness is what gives it that playfulness. The opening smells strongly of passion fruit with a hint of bergamot which hangs for a long time, much later the passion fruit still lingers but falls into the background as lotus and freesia take centre stage lying on a bed of amber.

  • Mont blanc lady emblem EDP
The mont blanc diamond! Pretty pretty!
The mont blanc diamond! Pretty pretty!

mont blanc lady emblem 1 mont blanc lady emblem 2 mont blanc lady emblem 3 mont blanc lady emblem 4 mont blanc lady emblem 5 mont blanc lady emblem 6 mont blanc lady emblem 7 mont blanc lady emblem 8

This hands down is the most beautiful bottle I have ever seen! Diamonds are a girl’s best friend! This bottle draws inspiration from the Mont Blanc diamond which was cut into the shape of the Mont blanc logo. Even the cap is shaped as the mont blanc star and made from glass which is different since usually caps are made from plastic or metal. The box is also something special it is sealed at the top and opens like a gift box. Mont blanc is most commonly known for their gorgeous jewellery. This is the second fragrance from the brand, the first one called Mont blanc legend is one of my all time fav scents. Mont Blanc lady emblem is a symbol of light and elegance. This one doesn’t smell anything like the first one. The PR tells me these have been flying off the shelves in stores. Top notes include Japanese sake (holla all you alcoholics this is the sake you are use to drinking but please don’t attempt to drink the perfume as you might die but yes it is a very unusual note which I’ve never seen before), pink pepper and pink grapefruit. The heart is all about rose essential LMR, jasmine, sambac and pomegranate. Ends off with a base of sandal wood oil, amber and musk crystal. Initially I thought it was a oriental fruity scent but later it transformed into a more of a aquatic floral kind of like a mix between Issey miyake l’eau d’issey floral and Armani acqua di gio. I pick up a really strong opening of pink pepper and grapefruit which later settles to a pomegranate and jasmine with a hint of rose. You can find these at Foschini, Truworths, Edgars, Stuttafords, Red Square, Clicks and Dis-chem for R1095 for 75ml, R895 for 50ml and R695 for 30ml.

  • Yardley London bond st EDP

yardley bond st 1 yardley bond st 2

Bond street in London is where it all began for Yardley back in 1910. It is described as sophisticated and unique with a mix orange blossom, jasmine, patchouli solar, honey cedar and woody notes. This is part of the oriental floral family. Yardley has released a fragrance with the identical name in the past and judging by the notes it seems to smell similar but I can’t get hold of the original so I can’t compare. Judging from the feel of the fragrance it seems oil based which means lasting power is very long. I don’t think there are any levels to this fragrance, what you smell in the opening is what you will smell all day so you get all the scents of the notes at once. It smells sweet, warm and woody. It smells feminine but bold. Even though there is orange blossom it is not that strong so it doesn’t add freshness. This makes a great mysterious classic night scent. This is available from Clicks, Foschini, Edgars and Dis-chem for R395,95 for 50ml or R279,95 for 30ml.

  • Adam Levine for men

adam levine for him

Yes please!
Yes please!

And finally one for my male readers.  Ah Adam Levine he is sexy as hell and makes amazing music. When people see celebrity fragrances it is very easy to banish it to the celeb fragrance grave yard however this first fragrance from the sexy singer surprised me and is actually something I would allow my man to wear. The bottle is designed like a microphone which is quite appropriate since he is a singer. This is part of the woody aromatic family with top notes of mandarin orange, grapefruit, lemon grass, sage and violet leaf. Mid notes include passion fruit, guava and ginger. Base notes are cedar, sandal wood and amber. It is the cliché citrus but with a modern and more edgy twist. Smells really fresh, I get a lot of guava, grapefruit and ginger scent.

What are some of your favourite scents? Do you have any questions to add I will try to answer them to the best of my ability.
