Experience the high life at Highball Craft Bar

This “trendy artisanal craft bar” boasts one of the best views in Johannesburg, overlooking the first hole of the Randpark Golf Course.

The setting and décor of the place itself is classy and casual. You can opt for the couches or a formal dinner table or bar like setting with the stools against the walls.

The Highball serves a selection of local craft drinks including beers, gins, whiskeys, rums and vodkas. No SAB brands in sight! The selection is all quality spirits and they specialise in gin which is all the rage at the moment. They even had a delicious blueberry tonic which I have never seen before.

The Highball’s eclectic menu is made up from a tempting selection of crafted tapas, light bites, salads, sandwiches, sharing boards and daily specials prepared by a French chef all food is Asian French inspired a really great combo.

Oven baked layers of beef mince and pasta
sheets topped with a Mornay sauce
Pieces of braised tender pork belly in a
syrupy jus served with broccoli florets,
grilled scallion and sweet potato wedges.
Grilled chicken filled pita bread with hummus
and peppadews.
Flash grilled tuna loin medallions on a
bed of homemade pickled cucumber.
Served with match stick potatoes.
Smoked salmon filled pita bread with cream
cheese, onion ring and capers.
Served with bacon, onion marmalade
and sweet potato wedges.
A refreshing South Asian dish made of
stir fry greens, lemongrass poached
prawns and glass noodles.

At the dine jozi style dinner we were offered a tapas style menu tasting of all the favourites it was a tough decision to pick a favourite but I highly recommend the sticky pork belly & broccoli. The pork belly was soft and delivered the just the right amount of flavour and throwing in the broccoli that is steamed makes it such a healthy option.

It is a great bar with great service to kick back and enjoy after a round of golf or a long day at work.

Pink Friyays at Maslow’s poolside

Another cosmopolitan experience awaits at The Maslow Sandton this summer. Fridays will be tickled pink with innovative gin-inspired cocktails to end off the week. Served at poolside within the hotel’s tranquil oasis garden, The Maslow’s crafted cocktails are the perfect way to say “hello” to the weekend.

The cocktails are expertly prepared at The Maslow’s Lacuna Bar which has become something of a social hotspot for after-work drinks with colleagues and lazy sundowners on weekends. Guests can also enjoy a selection of draught and bottled beer, handpicked wines, light meals and sushi inside or outside on the terrace.

Simone Musgrave, founder of Musgrave Gin comments “We are so thrilled to be aligned with such a prestigious venue and activate a premium offering for our discerning clientele in Gauteng. Look out for the hottest cocktail menu, the best poolside vibe and of course, VIP service from the professional and friendly staff at The Maslow!”

The star of the sundowners’ show on The Maslow’s Pink Fridays is Musgrave Gin – a premium, award-winning gin that acknowledges the flavours and history of Africa and its ancient spice route. Musgrave original crafted Gin has 11 botanicals, with top notes of aromatic Cardamom, African Ginger (Whitei Mondei) and Grains of Paradise. Also in the cast is Warwick First Lady Chardonnay, Warwick First Lady Rosé, an effortlessly elegant, balanced rosé with teeth tingling acidity and a delicate alcohol level of 11%, as well as the premium, handcrafted mixers from Fitch & Leedes.

“Mixing and matching these exceptional ingredients, our team has created five deliciously delightful gin-infused cocktails to refresh your spirit,” says Sibongile Morale, the PR, Marketing and Events Manager at The Maslow Sandton.

A must try on the cocktail menu is the First Lady Cocktail, an invigorating blend of Warwick First Lady Rosé, Musgrave Pink Gin, elderflower syrup, lime and Fitch & Leedes tonic. Another not-to-be-missed experience is the Gintleman, a spicy mix of Musgrave Original Gin, topped with Fitch & Leedes tonic and dressed with fresh basil. The glass is washed with Absinthe before the cocktail is poured to add flavour. The Miss Fitch’s Fluff is a playful cocktail, decked with candy floss. The beautifully prepared cocktails range price from R75 to R80 each.

Kick back and relax at The Maslow’s Pink Fridays, every Friday from 15 October 2018 at 16h00.

Review: Yamitsuki Restaurant

I was recently invited to Yamitsuki to experience the restaurant, I had actually been eyeing this place for sometime as the promo video I watched really distinguished this place from other Japanese restaurants. Founded in 2000. Firstly the layout of the restaurant itself you get the choice to sit in the tepanyaki part or the sushi bar part, I sat in the tepanyaki bar as I was fascinated with watching food prepared in front my eyes. The sushi bar part has a massive conveyor belt where you can sit and watch sushi be prepared as well as grab whichever sushi your heart desires. The food options are so impressive ranging from the sushi, sushi burrito, dumplings, burgers and seafood all at very reasonable prices.  The restaurant was very clean and neat and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

One you enter you get served complimentary dim sum and delicious lemon sorbet.

I ordered all the house specialties as they cannot be found else where: the fire sushi: blazed oshi, rock shrimp rose, omg roll, inferno roll, dessert sushi and the smoking pink grapefruit & rosemary G&T.

This restaurant offers not just amazing food but also a fun and exciting experience. I highly recommend this place as it is a real gem.

All the details to make a booking and visit this gem are below as well as they have many great specials where you can benefit without breaking the bank.

Review: Roxanne’s rum eatery has just launched a vegan menu

This unique Rum bar is following hot on the heels of the uber-popular gin bar trend. Situated in Pineslopes shopping centre in Fourways is where you will find this gem.

I was invited to try out their new vegan menu.
When I first walked in I fell in love with the interior filled with art and quirky words in neon lights makes it the perfect backdrop for selfies. And it even houses it’s own tattoo bar.
Roxanne’s plans to save the world one Meat-Free Monday at a timeThey call it Flexitarianismthe act of shifting from a meat-heavy diet to adopting a plant-based lifestyle and occasionally having meat as and when the desire arrives. And if anyone knows about desire, it’s Roxanne! They make eating vegan a tasty and easy option.
Roxanne’s believes that, perhaps, vegans were right all along. There is more than enough evidence to prove how reducing meat, dairy, and egg consumption can have a positive impact on your health and the Earth’s. So with that in mind … they are proud to introduce NEW vegan dishes, drinks and a full #RoxMeatFreeMonday menu to our offering.Pioneering Johannesburg’s flexi-eating culture, Roxanne’s Rum Eatery now offers creative, and delicious, vegan menu items for any occasion. You can eat meat-free versions of all your favourite dishes. Pizza, burgers, tacos, salads, sandwiches, desserts. Limitless really. The new menu promises not to disappoint, in fact, it may even surprise those meat-loving individuals!

Long gone are the days when vegan diets were considered weird, ‘hippie’ choices.

Trust me!). And of course a cocktail called “Bettie page”. The entire meal was delicious, presented amazingly and the service was amazing. You can see so much thought gets put into every detail from decor to food. I highly recommend this place.

My history with earbud has been either uncomfortable, them falling out or cables so long that everything just gets tangled. Ifrogz has identified this issue and has invented headphones designed with women in mind that are fashionable as well as functional. They are compact and lightweight, with simple functionality and good quality sound performance.
The Charisma (R599) affordable Bluetooth earbuds with good design and sound. No what does “with women in mind” mean you may be asking? They have a smaller ear bud design, and are magnetized to snap together when not in use. The color choices range from a lovely rose gold and white, red and black, or grey.
I particularly enjoy the bluetooth “wireless hub” with a magnetic clasp that allows you to clip the headphone to your top. You can also wrap the cord around the remote, which houses the battery, microphone, and all the electronics, and keep everything in place with the clasp which also gives control for the user for calls and music.

Battery life is rated at 10 hours at moderate volume levels and the headphone is sweat resistant but not waterproof.

The sound quality is amazing and there is great base coming from the ear buds. I also detect noise cancelling features.

Because your phone also deserves to be fashionable

You like to be fashionable so why shouldn’t your phone be too. FLAVR’s fashion cases props up your favorite mobile companion the way it deserves. Making your phone the perfect accessory to you oh so fashionable self. FLAVR has managed to merge function with fashion in the best way.

FLAVR’s incredibly durable but lightweight TPU fashion case keeps your phone safe from without worries. While you can dress your high-end handset in pugs, pineapples, bling, flowers, butterflys and nail polishes… the options are endless.

My fave was the glitter and flower option and wait for it the beautiful unique design contains REAL pressed flowers and we know that floral trends never go out of style.

The covers are also anti shock and fit like a glove.

You can find these babies online from TakeALot, Vodacom and MTN stores nationwide and prices range from R249 to R329. Alternatively if you are not in South Africa you can shop on the FLAVR website.

Restaurant review: 011 Dainfern by the baron and current mothers day promotion

This weekend I discovered a restaurant gem, 011 Dainfern by The Baron.

The décor is contemporary but still classic.  There are tv screens everywhere showcasing the sport. The bar is certainly the focal point of the restaurant with a giant train station clock hanging in the center, complete with brass pipes, alluding to the front of a railway train – which gives the entire restaurant a 1930’s train station vibe. Quite edgy and contemporary.

They have been open since September 2016 and are growing in leaps and bounds. In fact, they are proud of the fact that they are constantly evolving and changing as they go. Their initial wine list had only 20 wines on it – now it is exponentially bigger as they grow.

More famously known for it’s gin bar with an assortment of craft gins. They serve up a wide variety of local beers on tap including many craft and varieties that I love.

The food menu still carries a wide variety of seafoods and meaty grills as well as the casual lunch time sandwiches.

Spoilt for choice I started with the calamari, then for mains I picked the house specialty of bone marrow fillet and ended things off with my all time fave crème brûlée. They were all delicious and good portion sizes.

I washed that all down with a “first lady cocktail” which was delicious (they actually have a promotion running where if you book  a table on the 13th May for mothers day they will actually spoil your mom with a complimentary first lady cocktail).

011 Dainfern is open for lunch and dinner (just always open basically), seven days a week. This is a great place if you want to pop into catch the sport or have a few beers after work or even date night. You are sure to receive is great value for your money at 011 Dainfern.
