Review: Carbon Coco Natural Teeth Whitening

The past couple of years have seen charcoal face masks, cleansers, detoxes and now teeth whiteners. I have seen the fuss of this black charcoal teeth whitening treatment for a while now and I have to admit I have always been rather intrigued being a avid teeth whitener and all.

Carbon Coco is an Australian company that provides all-natural vegan friendly alternatives to oral care and teeth whitening. Carbon Coco Activated Charcoal Tooth Polish is made from organic coconut shell activated charcoal, bentonite powder and lemon myrtle. Carbon Coco claims to help you reduce plaque, detoxify your mouth, promote healthy gums, freshen your breath, protect enamel and helps with future stains.

Activated charcoal is a highly absorbent substance. It removes toxins when they adhere to the surface of the charcoal. It is not absorbed by the body, but passes through the GI system, so chemicals and toxins adhere to it, which then pass through the body and are expelled by the digestive system. Charcoal is “activated” when it is heated and/or exposed to specific gases. This process results in the creation of pores on the surface of the charcoal, which have the ability to trap certain particles. In the case of teeth whitening, the pores would be trapping and absorbing tannins, common stain-inducers found in wine and coffee.

The pack comes with:

  • 1 tub of Original Carbon Coco medical grade Activated Charcoal Tooth Polish.
  • 1 tube of Activated Charcoal Toothpaste. I couldn’t find the ingredients list, but it doesn’t contain Fluoride which I would prefer since that is an ingredient that strengthens teeth)
  • 1 Toothbrush with Bamboo Bristles

This black stuff isnt your average, every day charcoal. Itactivated charcoal, which is designed for medicinal use. So it is safe for you to use and you will still be alive if you accidentally ingest some.

The Benefits ….

  • NO added chemicals
  • Strengthens enamel
  • Whitens teeth
  • Polishes to remove build up
  • Vegan, 100% organic
  • Money back guarantee
  • Free basic world wide shipping.

At R540 it is a bit on the pricey side but with the size of the product and the amount you use it will last you very long.

How to use:

Simply wet the bamboo toothbrush, dip into the powder and tap off. Brush teeth for 3o seconds, rinse and brush teeth normally with toothpaste.

Carbon Coco says the product is safe for teeth and non-damaging to tooth enamel. The products are not abrasive at all and they basically just absorb and pull out toxins and stains away from the teeth. Also, the charcoal powder is very fine so it doesn’t harm the enamel. The tooth polish also has bentonite clay that helps remineralise your teeth. Both have no harmful chemicals as well.

Because the activated charcoal has adhesive properties, it adheres to stains to remove them.

The powder is tres messy. It gets all over the sink and you look like a horror movie character with it in my mouth. Luckily it wasnt too much of a pain to clean up, as I basically washed away with water and did not stain the sink. The tooth paste comes out scary black but changes into a minty white foam once you start brushing. Also the tooth paste doesn’t seem to contain fluoride which is something I would’ve liked to strengthen my teeth.

I didn’t notice massive whitening results it basically only pulls existing coffee and tea stains off your teeth slowly but if you want pearly whites you will need to stick to bleaching teeth with some kind of product that contains peroxide however this is great for daily use if you just want to lift stains off your teeth. Another down fall is brushing your teeth for 6 mins is a bit time consuming especially at night when I just want to brush my teeth for the recommended 2 mins and then pass out. Otherwise all in all this is a great product to try and use but just don’t expect miracles.

Restaurant review: 011 Dainfern by the baron and current mothers day promotion

This weekend I discovered a restaurant gem, 011 Dainfern by The Baron.

The décor is contemporary but still classic.  There are tv screens everywhere showcasing the sport. The bar is certainly the focal point of the restaurant with a giant train station clock hanging in the center, complete with brass pipes, alluding to the front of a railway train – which gives the entire restaurant a 1930’s train station vibe. Quite edgy and contemporary.

They have been open since September 2016 and are growing in leaps and bounds. In fact, they are proud of the fact that they are constantly evolving and changing as they go. Their initial wine list had only 20 wines on it – now it is exponentially bigger as they grow.

More famously known for it’s gin bar with an assortment of craft gins. They serve up a wide variety of local beers on tap including many craft and varieties that I love.

The food menu still carries a wide variety of seafoods and meaty grills as well as the casual lunch time sandwiches.

Spoilt for choice I started with the calamari, then for mains I picked the house specialty of bone marrow fillet and ended things off with my all time fave crème brûlée. They were all delicious and good portion sizes.

I washed that all down with a “first lady cocktail” which was delicious (they actually have a promotion running where if you book  a table on the 13th May for mothers day they will actually spoil your mom with a complimentary first lady cocktail).

011 Dainfern is open for lunch and dinner (just always open basically), seven days a week. This is a great place if you want to pop into catch the sport or have a few beers after work or even date night. You are sure to receive is great value for your money at 011 Dainfern.

My Laser Beautique Experience-painless laser hair removal and eye lash extentions

My under arm hair have always been annoying to me. My hair is quite dark and quite thick so I have to shave daily and even then there are pesky ingrown hairs. So when I heard about the pain free laser hair removal I knew I had to try it.

So firstly a bit of info about this ground breaking technology:

The Laser Beautique offers laser treatments using the revolutionary Soprano, which is the GOLD STANDARD 810nm diode laser for permanent hair reduction. It is the world’s first effective laser hair removal system to be FDA approved as “painless”.

Treatment benefits include:

1.     Maximum comfort, minimum fuss

2.     IN-MOTION™ technology allows for virtually PAIN-FREE laser hair removal without anesthesia or numbing gel

3.     GOLD STANDARD 810nm diode laser gives superior, more predictable, more reliable results

4.     Permanent hair reduction on all pigmented hair on all skin types (Asian and black skin types), including tanned skin, all year round

5.     Suited to successfully treat Men and Woman Alike

6.     Faster results which often mean fewer with clinic visits and fewer treatments are needed.

7.    This translates into savings for you!

Other machines on the market are painful and have known to cause burning and scarring, which can sometimes be permanent.

What makes this treatment Pain-Free?

What makes this laser treatment different from other treatments is that an 810-nm diode laser is utilized. Unlike previous generation systems, the energy from the laser is delivered via low fluence (energy) pulses at a rapid 10 pulse per second repetition rate. The temperature of the hair follicle containing the cells responsible for hair re-growth is raised slowly and the follicle is destroyed. This rise in temperature provides clients with deep dermal heating, a sensation that many users have compared to a soothing hot stone massage. This turns the otherwise uncomfortable process of hair removal into a very enjoyable one.

This revolutionary method of delivering low-level energy via a burst of rapid pulses is what enables Pain-Free yet Extremely Effective hair removal. By constantly moving the hand-piece during treatment, the energy is delivered uniformly, eliminating skipped spots and ensuring patient comfort.

In layman’s terms, what makes the Soprano XL different from other painful lasers is that older, conventional type lasers use a high peak power via the pick and place method of treating which feels like an elastic band snapping on your skin. The laser therapist would zap and move and zap and move, with every zap, the treatment becomes more uncomfortable. At The Laser Beautique we use the Soprano’s In Motion™ technology to gradually increase the power.

It can be compared to having a hot bath. If you drawer a boiling hot bath and try and get in, you will burn yourself. BUT if you get into a warm bath and gradually increase the temperature of the water you can withstand even higher temperatures without feeling any pain or discomfort. We are therefore able to treat our clients more aggressively yet painlessly.

For ultimate results, we recommend between 8 to 12 treatments, every 4 to 6 weeks- depending on the individual’s hair growth, skin type and hormones etc.

 My experience:

Upon my first session I already noticed a miraculous difference, the grow back was slower and there weren’t many hairs. I have been to 3 sessions now. The sessions are really quick (less than half an hour). You feel light pricking and the heat sometimes gets a bit uncomfortable but this is only towards the end. All in all though there is slight pain but not much. I really recommend it it is pretty life changing. I had mine done at Bedford Centre where Tzvia Hermann the owner of the chains office actually is. I also had lash extensions done there and a lash lift. The name may say laser but they offer everything you could need from a spa but they are just experts in laser.

The treatment takes around an hour.I walked into the spa and was welcomed by the beautician (Gerdi), who showed me into my treatment room. It looked a lot like a massage treatment room, so that put me at ease, but it had a massive lamp-type thingy hanging over the bed, which reminded me of the dentist. Suddenly less at ease.

I laid down on the bed and closed my eyes and prayed that when I woke up, I wouldn’t look like this:

Firstly, my eye lids were cleaned by the beautician, who ran warm water over them. Then she placed a sticky pads under my eyes to catch any fall outs.

(For those of you who have an irrational fear of things coming towards their eyes — like my 14 year-old self that thought eyeliner was trying to blind me — don’t worry, because your eyes are closed for the whole treatment.)

She then got cracking with the extensions, using tweezers to pick up the individual falsie, dip the end in glue and stick it to a bunch of my real lashes. The process was super relaxing!

Absolutely not. There isn’t any prodding or poking or scratching involved in the procedure, but if you open your eyes (even just a little bit) during the treatment, the fumes from the glue can make your eyes burn a little.

Well, in my opinion, BLOODY AMAZING. With the set I got, I looked like what I normally do with mascara on — but with no crummy side effects like not being able to rub your eye or cry when you’re watching The Bachelor finale.

If you’ve never had it before, it does feel kinda foreign. There is definitely a sense that there is more on your eyelids than usual, but it’s the same sensation that you have wearing mascara: You know something’s there, but it doesn’t bother you.

Lifestyle-wise, everything is pretty much the same. The only thing different is that you don’t have to put on mascara and that it’s best to avoid oil-based products around your eyelashes while you have the extensions in, so you don’t break down the glue and the lashes fall out quicker.

You can undergo eyelash extensions removal treatments from a spa, but I think you would only do this if your eyelash extensions were pissing you off or hurting your eyes.

If you don’t get them physically removed, they fall out within three to four weeks — so my suggestion is to enjoy them for as long as possible!

In my opinion, yes. Sure they are pretty expensive but they have a huge impact on the way you look — so think it as a good investment and sacrifice those lunches with the girls or reach for the Moët & Chandon instead of the Dom!

I haven’t worn a stitch of makeup since getting them because I feel like I’ve already made an effort, just by having them. The only downside: they’re pretty addictive. I’m already dreading the day that they start to fall out and I’ll be back to plain old lash times — but I think my bank balance will be happier if I reserve this beauty treat for special occasions and ‘treat yo self’ times. But for now, I will enjoy my luscious lashes and rake in the compliments on the reg.

When it was first developed in France, micellar water was designed as a way to avoid using their notoriously hard water supply.

Hard water has a high mineral content of calcium and magnesium. It can dry out skin, block pores, and upset your skin’s delicate balance, leading to redness, blotchiness, eczema and acne.

While micellar water might look and feel just like regular water, it actually contains millions of molecules, called micelles. Micelles are microscopic oil molecules that draw and trap dirt, makeup, and excess sebum.

When you apply micellar water to a cotton pad, the micelles act like a magnet. They perform a triple function in a single wipe:

  1. Clinging to the cotton pad
  2. Collecting and removing all the pollutants and impurities from your skin
  3. Replacing impurities with purified water and added hydrants

Nivea Perfect & Radiant Micellar 3-in-1 cleansing water is alcohol-free and contains great hydrating agents: glycerin, castor oil, vitamin E and panthenol.

It packs a punch and removes waterproof makeup in a flash but at the same time is very gentle on the skin because it does not contain any alcohol and does not dry out my skin or sting my eyes. There are many the  brands that have micellar waters on the market but not all micellar waters are created equal what makes each brand’s different is added ingredients. Nivea’s one is a goodie since they decided to add hydrating agents like vitamin E. Also a real crowd pleaser is the price tag it is good value for money, going R100 for 400ml. You may also be wondering how this fairs against the famous Bioderma Sensibio H2O and to be honest micellar water is micellar water this one just happens to be more affordable.

Review: Avon Free for Him and Her

Avon Free For Her is a floral, fruity and oriental fragrance. The freshness of iced pear granite matches with electric magnolia and gilded amber.

It is a lovely fruity sweet fragrance, best layered together using the body lotion first then the perfume to increase lasting power. It is not overpowering, I would say it is a fragrance for the young at heart. It kind of reminds me of Britney Spears Fantasy (it is even the same colour). When I smell it I get a strong whiff of vanilla even though that isn’t an official note.

The bottle is very trendy and unique with it’s upside down standing design, a pretty hue of a cross between purple and pink looks really great on any ladies’ dressing table.

Avon Free For Him is a vibrant aromatic fougere fragrance. Spicy ginger adds energy to the edgy infusion of velvety violet leaves and warm musk

The Matadora Fall collection from Morgan Taylor (yet another winner!) is a perfect reimagining of Fall classic colours. Inspired by the rich and sumptuous colors of Spain, the Matadora collection will ease you into fall by donning your nails with rich dark colors and surprising shimmer finishes.

I have on my nails “Don’t Break My Corazon” a cool gray toned red. It is cooler, and unlike any red I’ve seen before. It is a lovely twist on a classic red. It has a creme finish and applies evenly.

Olé My Way” another beauty is a dark blue shimmer that isn’t quite navy. The application was smooth, with no brush marks. The shimmer on this is a real stunner with flexes of lighter blue shimmers hidden inside.

This is the perfect autumn/winter collection and I will definitely be reaching for these interchangeably. RSP R149 per bottle.

Gosh SS18 collection

A couple of weeks ago we had the honor of rubbing shoulders with Bo Tjellesen (Owner and CEO of GOSH COPENHAGEN) and Bolette Tjellesen (Daughter of Bo Tjellesen, Makeup artist & Junior Key Account Manager) who came all the way from Denmark to meet fans and media. As you can gather this is a 100% family owned business and the family is so friendly and humble.

I got chatting with Bo and he had a very interesting story to share with me about how the brand actually got it’s interesting name. The brand was named by Bo’s dad. He was doing a crossword puzzle one day found himself stuck with a particularly tricky one. The final word turned out to be ‘gosh’, and he realised that nothing can be badly associated with that word, what a nice name for a company and the rest was history. Gosh originally started as a pharmaceutical company but Bo turned it towards cosmetics. And are we glad he did!

Gosh is extremely proud of the fact that they a vegan and animal cruelty free. Long live the bunnies!

The hero products contained in the new collection are cherry blossom (not a beautiful flower but also has rich anti-oxidant levels and soothing properties. Rich in essential fatty acids, it repairs the skins natural barriers to promote a smooth, supple skin. Anti-inflammatory properties) and samphire (not sapphire! Hydrasalinol is an oil derived from the Samphire plant. It is a powerful active ingredient for skin hydration).

So onto the products then:

  1. Mix and fix colour drops

These liquid foundations can be used alone or mix with your foundation. This is a very muli-purpose product. 001 light and 004 dark can be used like the body shop drops to lighten or darken your existing foundations or for contouring. 002 Green eliminates redness and 003 purple brightens skin.

2. Foundation plus + creamy compact

This is a cream to powder foundation, high coverage, creamy application by dries to a matte finish and is super hydrating. What I love the most is that it comes in a compact with a mirror and a sponge applicator so it is perfect for “on the go beauty”

3. Eye xpression 004 the four elements

The eyeshadow is buttery soft and higly pigmented. The colours represent the 4 elements of nature.

4. Metal eyes eyeliner

These are waterproof and extremely long lasting. After I swatched these they would not budge even after I washed my hands countless times. Highly pigmented. If you want to blend or smudge it you need to work quickly as it will not move once it dries. When they say metallic they really mean metallic.

5. Fake it! Lash primer

I am quite excited about this one as not many brands make just a separate lash primer. This basically you apply before the mascara and it helps give the lashes more volume, lift and separation as well as making mascara last longer. This one is grey as opposed to white so it is easier to cover with mascara.

6. Blown away mascara

Offers volume, length and curling. Does not flake or rub off. Very thin want and the teeth are far apart so it nicely separates the lashes.

7.Catchy eyes waterproof mascara

The banana shaped brush gives volume and curve.

8.Ultimate lipliner – with a twist

Applies creamy, dries matte and is long lasting. Great colour payoff and it comes with a smudger on the other end in case you want to use it over your entire lip. Has a nice grip and comes with a sharpener.

10. Lip oil

These are quite interesting one it looks like a lip gloss but is called a lip oil. It is mostly likely due to the fact that it is sheerer than a pigmented lipgloss but more tinted than a clear gloss plus it serves up much more moisture. I received the shade crystal star which I also like to use as a highlighter on my cheek bone. It has a hint of colour but is quite holographic and glittery. Can be used on it’s own or over a lipstick.

11. The red lipstick collection called “the red” consisting of a lipliner, matte lipstick and matte liquid lipstick.

This is what I would call the ultimate red lipstick. It’s the perfect red that makes your teeth look perfectly white since it is blue based and what Coco Chanel and Marilyn Monroe would wear.
